Quantum Entanglement of Independent Particles Without Any Contact – Ever

Quantum computers can solve infinite problems.
“And the computers that one day use quantum physics, verifying impossible problems over immeasurable distances, might seem to us more like gods.”

“There is therefore a curious phenomenon in which physicists reject the dualist interpretation by appeal to philosophy and then proceed to formulate physicalist solutions to the measurement problem (e.g. the many-worlds interpretation); meanwhile philosophers reject dualism by appeal to such physical theories (and in particular, the fact that the laws of those theories don’t mention consciousness). If that is what the argument for physicalism amounts to then it is viciously circular.”
It’s possible that they are both right.. that there is an unknown set of physical laws that we can see or measure yet.

‘Powerful artificial intelligence is like the proverbial genie in a bottle. A seemingly innocent wish — “make my home eco-friendly” — can lead to unintended consequences.’
Perhaps this is why many prayers go unanswered.. at least in the way we want them too. It reminds me of when the ancient Israelites asked for a king “like the other nations”. After a stern warning from God about how that was going to turn out for them.. they asked anyway. And God said, “Give the people what they want”… and of course it was a disaster for them.
How many people have asked for fame and riches only to be destroyed by them? Why would having an all powerful AI “genie” be any different? Cure all the diseases? Death by over population and war. Infinite life can easily be an infinite hell.

TLDR: It’s more likely that a human brain (complete with human thoughts/memories) snaps into existence than it is for our Universe to exist with us in it. It’s actually more likely that we are all Boltzman brains.
It’s completely bonkers, and that’s the point. The fact that our Universe is exists in the way it does is completely bonkers. This example is meant to highlight that.

“Human beings have a very rich and complex experience; horses less so; mice less so again. As we move to simpler and simpler forms of life, we find simpler and simpler forms of experience. Perhaps, at some point, the light switches off, and consciousness disappears. But it’s at least coherent to suppose that this continuum of consciousness fading while never quite turning off carries on into inorganic matter, with fundamental particles having almost unimaginably simple forms of experience to reflect their incredibly simple nature. That’s what panpsychists believe.”

The idea here is that they’ve reduced the laws of physics down to the spin of particles. I still find that unsatisfactory and I don’t really see why the spin is inevitable or why there are particles at all.
Describing the operating system on a computer doesn’t explain why there is a computer. It feels like they are saying that because there is a computer.. there is an operating system as if that’s a given.
Update: A rebuttal: https://www.math.columbia.edu/~woit/wordpress/?p=11513
(I have no idea what this person is talking about.. it’s far to technical. His bigger point about Quanta Magazine’s quality going down the drain is sad though. I hope they are wrong.)

Probably.. the click-bait title was “definitely”. There really aren’t a lot of great alternatives apart from a creator. If AI villagers in a computer game developed “souls” they would say the same thing.. and they wouldn’t be wrong. There are an infinite number of Minecraft “universes”.
The headline says it all.. the universe is made of bubbles containing tiny universes. Of course. The best part is how they talk about this as if it makes complete sense and is 100% proven fact.
